what the...

I am a bit amazed about the situation in the southern United States this week. It is almost unbelievable. Volunteers are heading in as fast as they can. Things I am certain are tough all around. So time will tell how the whole thing will be remembered. Hopefully political bittering will not prevent things from being worse then they need to be.

Here is a quote from Sri Lanka:

"I am absolutely disgusted. After the tsunami our people, even the ones who lost everything, wanted to help the others who were suffering," said Sajeewa Chinthaka, 36, as he watched a cricket match in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

"Not a single tourist caught in the tsunami was mugged. Now with all this happening in the U.S. we can easily see where the civilized part of the world's population is."

This is a huge public relations mess for the United States. Hope the relief comes fast and efficiently.

About guns...................................

Are they really that great? The NRA states that americans have the right to bear arms whenever they want. So people are shooting all around New Orleans, is that really the best thing. Would the NRA support people bearing arms there? Well they would argue they are thugs or terrorists or whatever they might argue, but they still carry the guns and the same rights that the organization works towards.

All the people who had the resources to become members of the NRA have fleed the city, so the idea that guns would help people secure their homes and family's. So are guns really that great? In this case they are not and on a day to day basis for police all over the country, they are not.

We need to dispell this notion that it is a human right to carry a gun. It is a human right to not have idiots with guns running around your town, whether you live in the US or a disfunctional , poverty sticken country, whether it is in times of peace, disaster, or civil unrest.

Stop selling guns, and stop selling so many over sees. We are a country of profit making idiots.

the thing about guns is that when the bill of rights was drawn up, political rebellion was still in vogue. try doing that without guns. over the years, even dissidents have become comparatively complacent.

sure, it's unlikely that an armed rebellion will ever happen (again) in america. but what if the country took a decidedly bleak turn, one in which the government veered toward oppression and started rescinding rights? (i'm willing to bet you can think of at least one friend that already feels this way, to an extent.) i, for one, would prefer to have the right to bear arms.

at the same time, i am not a gun owner.
